Bookending Winter 2018 | Greetings From Krampus!

Posted December 19, 2018 by Bluestocking Bookworm in Discussion, Features / 0 Comments

Hey, awesome nerds! Welcome to my second day hosting a prompt for Bookending Winter, created by Clo over at Book Dragons. Please take a moment to pop over and say hi to her, because she rocks!

Greetings from Krampus

Krampus is everyone’s favourite Christmas demon! A half man, half goat, his origins go back to Norse mythology, where it states he is the son of the goddess Hel. He is mostly celebrated in Austria and some parts of Germany as an anti-Saint Nicholas, but his popularity is spreading overseas.

Unlike old St. Nick, Krampus concerns himself with the naughty children. If you are not good, you will receive coal instead of presents, and a lashing from Krampus’ bundle of birch twigs. If you are really bad, Krampus might just help your parents out by dragging you to the underworld.

(You can read more about Krampus, and other mythical companions of Saint Nicholas here, here, and here.)

Who’s been naughty?

Which characters from books you read this year would you like to see be visited by Krampus? You can also post if you think the character deserves coal, a swat from the birch bundle, or to go to the underworld.

My Picks

The Staryk Lord from Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
Yeah, you definitely get coal.

Inan from Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Coal and a swat from the birch bundle! Maybe a few swats, just for good measure.

Mada Vittoria from Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd
Several swats. And all your possessions turned to coal.

Lachlan from This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada
TO THE UNDERWORLD WITH YOU!

Stay bookish, lovelies!
